Seek out and compile the rainfall and streamflow data for physioclimactic zone of interest. Some researchers or agencies may have the data or actually done this. A useful tool for you may be flow duration curves for stream gauging stations, and you might try normalizing this by watershed area, to help compare responses within the physiographic area. Some of the area hydrologists or researchers may have selected and validated some hydrologic models, or adjusted them to help them fit circumstances.
It it is not unusual in USA for potential dam sites to collect 5-10 years of streamflow and rainfall data before building a large dam, and its best to hire this done by professional hydrologists, experienced technicians or researchers with appropriate steam gauging equipment. Being exposed and trained in these methods is probably sufficient, with some periodic review and as necessary guidance. Comparing any collected data with nearby station data and model results can be helpful. Not much better than having some data from the same watershed of the proposed dam, even if you lack time to collect over a decade.
I think SWAT is better then all. it is user friendly and also tutorial are available in YouTube and google. Beside you can find huge article that was used SWAT and manual is also available. It has no registry problem at all.
Basically, computing inflow discharge using the forecast rainfall would probably indicate the Rainfall-Runoff behavior of the upstream basins. The simplest model that will represent the hydrology aspect of the basin is the HEC-HMS model (Quasi-distributed model). This model is simple, fasts, easy to develop and allow to generate the flow hydrograph basin wise as well in the outlet as per the time frame set, and the peak as well as volume can be computed.
Thanks Shanbor. I have forecasted rainfall data in hourly for next 72 hours, So can i get basin inflow forecast in cumecs in hourly temporal resolution using HEC-HMS model?
