I think closed bioreactor with online process monitoring capacity is better than open systems. This will prevents fluctuations that may arise from environmental influence from open systems and most importantly prevents contamination.

What kind of wastewater is that?
I am assuming that you want *light* in your bioreactor. In that case, the best option may be an open system - it depends also on volumes, composition of the residue, microalgae selected for treatmente, etc.
One of the main reasons to use a closed bioreactor is to better control the system.
However, if you are talking about photobioreactors for wastewater treatment (of residues possibly already contaminated with several microrganisms), and in large volumes, then open systems are not strictly better, but the *feasible* option. Sterilizing your culture media in such cases is costly, so a closed system would be subjected to contaminantion anyway. And the reactor must have a high surface to volume ratio, for light distribution, which makes large closed reactors very expensive.

Their goals answer the question. closed systems are generally more expensive however allow greater control parameter and the quality of co-product. Open systems are subject to contamination and lower quality of co-product in entando generally cheaper and performed in cases that require larger scale
You know wastewaters are not sterile liquids. There are alot number specimens of microoorganism in wastewaters. Eventhough you started with an only specimen in your reactor (for example Chlorella sp.), new algal specimens will reproduce in your reactor if you use nonsteril wastewater or nonsteril synthetic wastewater. In that case it is not important whether you use open or closed bioreactor. However if you want study with an unique specimen you should use steril wastewater and closed bioreactor.
