It depends in which country you are looking. But in general look at postal service for letters, it disappeared (email, communication program for working together overtook it). But then you have delivery services for online stores. Mobile phones overtook the place of land lines. Look what company such as Amazon (online bookstores) and Alibaba (shopping) have done. Stock brokers (trading websites), transportation (Uber). Look at what fintech is doing with banking. Every business sector can be disrupted now.

Travel agencies is a good one. Do you have examples of specific companies that are affected by digital and how they are.

Which industries are being disrupted the most by digital?

I'm working as an IT consultant for more than 20 years in South East Asian countries across different industries including: Telco, Media, Transport, FSI, Manufacturing, Distribution and Public sectors etc. My personal experience is that Telco & Media are highly disrupted by digitalization & digital transformation like OTT challenges e.g. Whatsapp call instead of landline / mobile calls, horizontalized network function / network function virtualization instead of verticaclized / physical network functions, hardcopy printing & analogy streaming vs digital streaming etc just to name a few.

Think the work processes or concepts in any industry that can be further automated or transformed by leveraging on ICT will be potentially disrupted by digital.

I am particularly interested to explore Fintech and Research Gate. Do you think Research Gate is a digital disrupter? In what way if Fintech disrupting banking/insurance?

I would not call Research Gate a disrupter, it is not taking place of publishing companies of platforms, it hasn't really created a new market or pushed competitors from the market. What it has done is creating an opportunity for scientists to be in communication with each other and to work together. And that is very useful. I would call it simply 'frugal innovation'.

Fintech (financial technology)

Mpesa for me is an example of fintech and I would call it a disrupter. Where poor people were depended on banks for transfer of money, that is not needed anymore. A lot of poor farmers couldn't open a bank account, banks are not needed for that any more with an Mpesa-account and even people who used to have a bank account do not use it as often anymore with their Mpesa-account.

A lot of brokers are not needed anymore, there are IT-applications for trading. Crowdfunding platforms for lending money make banks and financial institution in some sense obsolete. Billions are being transferred via crowdfunding without involvement of banks. Mobile banking, crypto-currency through blockchains technology, all are forms of fintech, effecting the traditional financial players.

Rudi Darson MPESA is a great innovation. Thank you for bringing this up. You are right about brokers and traders, forex and stock trading.

The issue of Research Gate warrants a separate discussion. Thank you for bringing this up. I am opening a separate thread on it.

Of course the printing world is being disrupted by 3D-printing, but Woelabs in Togo, see https://www.myafricais.com/woelab_3dprinting/ took it a step further and created the first 3D-printer built totally from electronic waste (e-waste) in Africa. You are right Rudi Darson printing has taken a serious battering. The Nieman Fellowship did a report with Clayton Christensen showing how digital has impacted print and I guess broadcasting in general.

3D printing is a real game changer. The possibilities are endless with 3D printing.
