In a national level exam, a question is asked that which human body organ involved in the purification of blood?
The options are (a) Lungs (b) Kidneys
Can anybody give an answer to clear confusion between lungs and kidney? According to me, lungs is the best answer. The kidney is for filtration.
Lungs exchange gases---oxygen for carbon dioxide. They can also metabolize xenobiotics from blood, so do some "purification". But their major role is gas exchange. Kidneys filter, remove, and exchange toxins, metabolites, and ionic components from the blood so their major purpose is "purification". If I had the question to answer, I'd answer kidneys because of the use of the word "purification". But I understand why this can be confusing when you think about it.

Lungs work is gaseous exchange and do some function in purification. But kidney play a major role in blood purification... So kidney
i think that kidney is more implicated in blood purification than lung, so kidney is the good answer.
Kidney is the right option because it ultimately flush off the toxicants whereas lung tied up the excess of acid or base disbalances in the form of buffers until it is ultimately removed by kidney which takes time. And besides maintaining the acid base balance, kidney also removes xenobiotics, drugs and unwanted substances from the blood.
There is no research available on which organ 'purifies' exactly what percentage of the blood. The internal organs all have a part to play in the purification process the pattern also depends on various external factors including but not limited to consumption quantity of water, types and quality of foods consumed, quality of air, geographic effects, etc. It is an interesting research to pursue for Blood Laboratories.
Lungs are actually oxygenating the blood so that oxidation of the nutrients occurs so as to release energy. Kidneys remove toxic substances like creatinine, uric acid etc. So, I think the correct answer is Kidney.
Lungs perform gaseous exchange and hence purify the blood but kidney purify the blood by removing most of the toxins hence if one has to choose, one should go for kidney.
