I am looking for a digital elevation model (DEM) to model future coastal flooding caused by sea-level rise (with a bathtub approach). This DEM has to be global and free. I found two products that might match those requirements:
- CoastalDEM (Article CoastalDEM: A Global Coastal Digital Elevation Model Improve...
) which seems to be relevant for our study but only the product with a horizontal resolution of 90m is free.- Copernicus DEM (https://spacedata.copernicus.eu/web/cscda/dataset-details?articleId=394198) which has a free and global product with a horizontal resolution of 30m. This product is based on WorldDEM (derived from TanDEM-X DEM).
Which of these 2 DEM is better? Which other DEM might be better?

I think these two data are suitable for your project. Your choice would depend on:
1 The data requirement resolution needed to run accurately the bathtub approach;
2; the level of accuracy you want to achieve;
3. the level of error encounter on each data.
Fisrt of all, we can consider that 30m data resolution will provide a more accurate results that the 90m one, however my advice is to use both and compare de results obtained. At the end, retain the one that correspond to your hypotheses. May both data could provide comparable results what is also a good result

I usually worked with SRTM DEM or Aster DEM as it gives a 30-metre resolution whereas Copernicus DEM gives 90 Metre resolution.

) it is stated that global DEM are not accurate enough for this kind of study. However there is no alternative for my study due to the large size of the study zone.The vertical accuracy of global DEMs is also compared in this article and both CoastalDEM and Copernicus DEM are among the most accurate.

Dear Fabien Verniest I definitely recommend the Copernicus DEM version 2020. 30 and 90 meters versions are open and free but In case you are part of a European Project, you can also access the 10m resolution over the EE39 countries. https://spacedata.copernicus.eu/web/cscda/dataset-details?articleId=394198
Please also note that the Copernicus DEM is continuously improved with the infilling of high-resolution national DEMs and new perfective maintenance releases are foreseen every year.
