Ethereum is an open blockchain platform that allows anyone to build and use decentralized blockchain based applications. Like Bitcoin, nobody controls or owns Ethereum - it's an open source project built by many people around the world. But unlike the Bitcoin protocol, Ethereum is designed to be adaptable and flexible. It's easy to create new apps on Ethereum platform, and with the release of Homestead it's now safe for anyone to use these apps.

If this technology is so complicated, why is it called "blockchain"? At its most basic level, the blockchain is literally just a series of blocks, but not in the traditional sense of these words. When we say the words "block" and "chain" in this context, we are actually talking about digital information ("block") stored in a public database ("chain").

Ethereum nodes store its binary data in a key-value storage system called LevelDB. Ethereum is a decentralized blockchain platform where full nodes store its own version of full blockchain data required to validate transaction blocks.

Ethereum uses LevelDB internally. Geth stores block data, including headers, transactions, and receipts, in LevelDB. Each block is essentially a key-value pair, where the key might be a combination of the block number and hash, and the value is the serialized block data.

Ethereum maintains a "world state," which represents the current balance and storage of all accounts on the network. Since Geth 1.9.0, a "freezer" database has been introduced.The freezer database has lower operational requirements than LevelDB, allowing for more efficient storage of archival data.
