On toughnes and other mechanical properties of the steel influences it chemical compositionm, thermal and deformation regimes, considering there are not porous or non metallic inlays
The ability to absorb energy without fracturing is the toughness of the material. Mostly fractures of iron and steel materials are initiated at pre-existing defects. These defects can be small enough to be elements of the micro structure or, when slightly larger, can be macroscopic cracks in the material or, in the extreme case, visually observable discontinuities in the structure. A tough steel material resists the propagation of defects through processes such as yielding and plastic deformation.
In addition to Chemical composition & Temperature, Micro structure of steel plays a prominent role in deciding the toughness of steel.
