I have done the ayurvedic plant extracts. I'm stuck with finding which technique to implement to analyze bioactive components. Which approach to use HPLC or GC-MS or any other methods? Kindly help me.
"If you want to identify specific compounds like phenolics or flavonoids, then HPLC could be a better option. However, if you want to identify the maximum number of compounds present, then go for GCMS, UPLCMS, or LCMS. GCMS is the most cost-effective option among these techniques."
The most recommended for the identification and/or quantification of bioactive compounds present in plant extracts is UHPLC or HPLC coupled to mass spectrometry, as they give more accurate information, especially if you have no idea what compounds your extract contains. In the case of gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, it is mostly used for the analysis of essential oils and volatile substances, although by means of derivatization, you can analyze extracts.
The use of the method of analysis is based on the chemistry of compounds, if it is organic and nonvolatile HPLC can be preferred, however for volatile compounds GC is the best method of analysis. You may go through the literature survey for a better understanding of methods of analysis.
