I am trained in Physics, but I spent my PhD doing biomedical research (wet lab). Now, I want to continue my career in biomedical research without losing my background as a physicist.
So, what is the field of science that would allow me to study biological systems using the methods of Physics (in particular, mathematical modelling)?

I have heard about Mechanobiology which is an exciting, multidisciplinary area that involves biology, physics, engineering, and medicine. It studies the role that mechanical forces play in the physiology and pathology of biological systems by combining a large array of complementary methodologies. Linking cell mechanics to intracellular signaling and how this controls cellular behavior and fate would be interesting to study.
There are different receptors on the cell membrane which interact indirectly or directly with cytosolic force-sensing elements like the microtubules for example. Mechanosensitive ion channels would be quite interesting to work on, as they are the best characterized biological force-sensing system. They present the best example of coupling protein conformations to the mechanics of the surrounding cell membrane.
The membrane of cells and organelles do not behave as inert substrate that surround their associated membrane proteins. Rather, the membrane is a dynamic medium that directly affects the function and spatial distribution of the proteins embedded in it. Studying the molecular details of mechanosensation within the context of the membrane will help to understand how mechanical force can generate biophysical alterations that in turn lead to adaptive changes in cellular physiology.
