When trying to analyze bullet impact with LS Dyna it is passing through the plate without destruction. I am trying to model a bullet impact in LS-DYNA using CONTACT_AUTOMATIC_SURFACE_TO_SURFACE. Initially, the bullet is in fact impacting the plate. However, after some time the bullet just seems to pass through the rest of the plate but it is not showing any kind of erosion. Any idea what is happening? I am trying with: *MAT_PIECEWISE_LINEAR_PLASTICITY and also *MAT_PLASTIC_KINEMATIC.
I have tried those contacts one by one but none of them had worked;
- *CONTACT_NODES_TO_SURFACE
- *CONTACT_ONE_WAY_SURFACE_TO_SURFACE
- CONTACT_AUTOMATIC_SURFACE_TO_SURFACE.
- *CONTACT_ERODING_SURFACE_TO_SURFACE
I also tried to assign part and segment. I used Hourglass (4-5)
Is the diameter / cross section area of the bullet too small, that, it is able to penetrate through the target like a needle !! In that case, perhaps, erosion of adjacent elements near the bullet + target contact area may not be possible. Elements may be just getting compressed laterally and giving way to the bullet. My thinking is like a layman and crude mechanics of solids approach.
It sud work with these contact, if erosion would have happened then u needed to use eroded_surface_to_surface_contact with IADJ and erosop set to 1. Control_contact sud use ENMASS set to 2.
If somehow your contacts are not working, u cud use null layer of shells and give a surface to surface contact for null elements. If you have any other issue, u can contact me
Dear Prabhakar Gundlapalli, I completed the whole design in SolidWorks as an assembly and did my experiment by paying attention to the units. I have shared the technical drawing I followed and the measurements in Ls-Dyna as a pdf for you. After that, I still tried for a bigger threat but still got a negative result.
