For example, I ask my students to count by two and the third one in the row should clap instead of saying the number, or I ask them to stand up and sit down row by row and vertically. Have you tried integrating clickers/audience response system technology? That can certainly help make large classes more dynamic.

I broke the room up by seating everyone against the walls in small competitive groups of ten. The game played was that each day according to group achievement they moved up one.

Interesting question. In my personal experience with the large classrooms I tried to keep the attention high using short and very engaging videos on the subject. Other times I assing to the students some scientific articles to be analyzed in groups of 2 -3 students, then increasing the group size by gradually grouping different subgroups and finally exposing the results achieved by the main groups in class. Other times I use the technique of reflection on a theme in small groups with no more than 10-12 participants per group for a total of 15-20 groups, and then discuss the results together. In each individual group always at least one facilitator student, to whom I assign the mandates for conducting the discussion.
