As a doctoral student, I learned the ropes of research by project participation. I understood I had to pay my dues and that even after I graduate there would be times in which I would be called upon in service. Several years after earning my PhD, I am inundated with payments for citations to be properly posted, payments for some journal publications, payments for student loans, payments for organization affiliation, payments, payments, and other payments. Can anyone put this into a clear perspective?

I frequently receive mail from foreign countries for award of merit certificates on payment basis.
My humble submission to you - do not run after anything on payment basis like publications, honorary members of societies, awards, fictitious certificates praising your works, etc. at this stage of your life and even in future.
So I foresee that the payment system would never stop until and unless you stop from your end.

I assure you, I have not gone after these things as I graduated from a credible school, belong to a credible national organization, and have only on one or two occasions made a small payment for publication because of the work product that had a limited but important population. Let me clarify my point. To meet the needs of maintaining credentials, etc., we have become a marketing sector from those who have no real interest in the advancement of research but only wish to earn money from the requirements that are associated with our trade. We must publish. We must be affiliated with organizations. The list goes on. So, we become targets. Maintaining academic credibility with the onslaught of 'fake' publications is a battle because of the limited scope of many credible publications. As scholars, how can we bring attention to these falsehoods and still allow some of the innovative ideas to seep into academia?
Recently I have seen that University Grant Commission (India) and even for recruitment of posts the list of journals has been restricted to good periodicals so that authors can be forced to publish quality works in good periodicals only. Thank you Subir. Not many established PhDs share this type of information. Sad but it has been my direct experience that these type of resources are a source of a potential 'leg up' on near competition. This should not be so!
