The rules are simple and clear to allow your reader to verify your sources.

If you cannot write the text any better, then you put it into quotes, and cite the source. If you can write the text better, then you paraphrase it and cite the source. In both cases you include the full reference in your References Section. This rule applies for text in any section of the source paper.

Also, if you copy any data, figures, tables or pictures, your caption must include a citation and the full reference must be given in your References Section, even if you redraw or reformat the material.

My advice is to use a reference manager from the beginning. Because it also allows me to find themes, I use Qiqqa.

Citation of a very general sentence in the introduction of other parts of a paper must be cited?

In my opinion, the methodology and the results of research worth to be cited.

1. Almost all new studies are the extension of the old ones and also based on those to some extent. To write the result of a new study, therefore, students should cite such old papers as were directly relevant to their research in the introduction section.

2. In the method section, the students should refer to the papers on which their methods depended.

3. In the discussion section, the students should cite recent, similar papers for comparison and argument.

If the information is of a well-known nature, then there is no need to cite it. My rule of thumb is that I would not cite if a Google search yields more than ten results.

Remember only to cite work that is relevant to your research. Do not cite for citation sake.

When to cite: Where ever you quote a work from some ones else you need to put the reference of that.

How to cite: This according to the demand of the journal that you intend to submit for publishing.

In addition to the comments above, I would suggest that it should be rare to have a paragraph in our introduction, literature review, and discussion that does not contain at least one or two citations. Anything in your research design that is based on the work of someone else should also be cited.

Remember that one of the main purposes of the citations is to allow readers to easily find more detail. Sometimes it is good to provide citations for very well-known ideas, just so that readers can find the most recent analysis or use of the ideas.

Some good advice here. I would add the following advice:

1) only cite sources you have read;

2) to provide context and overview on any topic it helps to seek out sources that summarise research. Typically these are literature reviews, systematic reviews, scholarly reference books and handbooks. You can use these to provide context for your research and cite them in your review of the literature;

3) if you are using someones words always attribute them or if you want to quote them and identify the quotes clearly (indent use "").

4) know your audience. Broad foundational ideas will be well know to your audience and as Ian says above may not need citation. However, discussions about, agreements with or disagreements with them would need to be cited.

5) It may be expected that you cite senior colleagues in your papers. Usually they will be writing about your topic anyway if they are in the same area or department. You may have to consider carefully the relevance of each citation to your work of the topic. Any or too many erroneous will compromise any paper or assignment.

It is a well known fact that not all citations are relevant, functional and serve as building blocks in science, as originally it was supposed to be. Therefore, it is recommended that citations will serve these functions and avoid other irrelevant motivations.

If a researcher cite an exact phrase, than it should be within quotation marks with the name of the cited author and the date of publication.

If the citation is not an exact phrase then the last name of the author and the publication date will appear within brackets.

There are several citation styles (APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard etc) , and when the author decides to use one of these styles he should stick throughout his paper to this same style.

On the internet there are guides for each citation style.

Citation to previous , relevant studies are indicators of an acknowledgement. the citation recognizes that a researcher in the past analyzed a related subject, and actually your work is building new findings upon previous results, and that is how science is built. Citations have a certain style (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc,), and once you start with a certain style, you have to continuously use it in your work.

I usually cite the source when including relevant data, information, and past results that are identified essential for my manuscript. Citation, referencing is very useful with software. I use Mendeley referencing software for it's freely available and easy to operate.

We should not copy and paste the contents directly from the other's work. We should read, understand, and write it in our own way. We should be very careful for citing each information, as per journal format, from related works. I found some students also cite blog and website articles (including wikipadia), I would recommend them to avoid those contents because they are not reviewed by scientific community and could not be valid. In addition, those contents can be easily edited by the authors. Please follow published research articles, books, conference papers, preprints (by trusted authos) etc only. However, you can also follow official website of big organizations such as NASA, ESA etc.
