My opinion is that the burning of fossil fuel leads to CO2 emission. One can get heat and electricity from the solar energy. If one is very dedicated to get heat for the different heating processes and electricity supply for the diverse demand in different activities including manufacturing, transportation from sun, then he can reduce much the CO2 emission. I think it is required to reduce the CO2 emission to the level that can be accommodated by the earth self regeneration.
I mean the solar energy can as a renewable energy source contribute to a great reduction in CO2 emission provided we do our best in photvoltaic and solar heating.

I can't help being skeptical about the solution to global warming provided by renewable energy alone. At best, RE will mitigate the effects but in the long run, being realistic about the evolution of society and taking into consideration technological developments, a drastic reduction of GHG emissions is not likely to take place. Fission and fusion energies could contribute as well but we all know that they are not within the reach of many countries and others are clearly against them. Given the population growth and the need to reduce energy poverty all energy sources will need to be considered and GHG emissions may not be a priority for many countries.
Not to be forgotten, the expansion of agricultural activities is reducing the land surface covered by rainforest with a negative impact on CO2 conversion to oxygen.
One of the future potentials is to use solar energy for hydrogen production through biomass pyrolysis, as disscused in the below mentioned research. Happy new year.
