Rember that a good supervisor often helps his student in many ways even after the award of Ph D.

Mutual understanding is the best way. My opinion is not applicable for those supervisors who always force the students to place their names as the first author.

Thanks for your replies. The supervisors are obviously NOT THAT GOOD. For whatever reason they presented/published the research outcome of the students without informing / involving the students.

In such cases do whatever you like. Just guard yourself in all ways so that the supervisor cannot harm you.

Why the supervisors dare to do ?

Because the governors of the universities and the nations acquiesce in the behaviour. Stopping it is the duty of the governors, not students.

Such thefts happens occasionally which consequently completely destroys the good relationship between the supervisor and the student.

This kind of behavior is like infectious disease, quickly popular among colleagues, universities, the country, even to other countries. His students will do the same, even heavier.

What's the law and practice of 'Authorship' between supervisor and student?

It it undesirable behavior for a supervisor to present / publish papers of his / her student without letting him / her knows or at least perform a joint-publishing together. Not sure there is such a law available to govern such behavior / situation but this is definitely an ethical issue that perhaps university senate needs to investigate & take action accordingly. Personally finding no harm letting Master / PhD students to present their papers but in research conference proceeding or journal article, both supervisee & supervisor can put their names together after appropriate agreement between them.

First of all, I believe that in most places, research article is used as a drug by academic mafia. I am sorry to say but that's a bitter truth. Students are often threatened to publish 3-4 articles during the Ph.D. tenture, which is rubbish. Moreover, few cases have been witnessed where supervisor puts himself as main author even if the student did the entire work. Its a bad practice to polish his/her own career for getting publicity, fame and promotions. Its the FEAR of loosing a degree which prevents him/her to take any action against supervisor/system. But I think that the first author position should be given to the Ph.D. student which will not only help his course but also will motivate him/her. I think there should be a government body which should take regular feedback from the students for their supervisors and control this malpractice.

I agree with Avishek Das. As it obligatory now in many universities to publish a few papers before Ph D thesis submission, students often get published quickly in inferior journals by paying money.

Especially the fear of losing the degree causes the students to step back in most of the cases..

And i have seen one example,where there was an issue about authorship between the student A who did the entire work and the guide(who wanted to give the 1st authorship to another student B who did not do a single work). But student A could not do anything just in fear of losing the degree..

@ Sarwar J. Minar Answer of your question is- Student should take immediate action rather than just encouraging supervisor's illegal activities. Just write a mail to your supervisor (if you fear speaking to him) stating your problem. And forward the mail to the registrar, vice-chancellor, and your funding agency. And don't fear anyone if you are not wrong.

There is no difference between the supervisor and the student, the color of researchers working in one goal is the success of the research each of them have the freedom to make the research successful taking into account the partnership in the work of research.

Yes, it should be like a joint bank account with equal liability. No one should deceive each other at any stage.

When you supervise a student and wants him to get his PhD you let him be the first author. The supervisor is the last author, the one who organized the whole thing, let him/her use the laboratory. In many country it is known that the last author holds the senior position.

In India, the MCI (Medical council of India) advocates at least two publication for younger faculty within the tenure of current position before eligibility for further position, the younger faculty members are always in a rush to publish at the cost of the work of students or even in some cases as ghost authors. They argue that the student shall have their own opportunity later when they shall have students working under them. This in certain cases fuels this unhealthy trend.

Most of the teachers with academic interest however do not follow this practice.
