Project work can extend the horizon and practice of business as usual, but leads many times to the confirmation of existing business standards, i.e. the robustness of best business practices can be tested and challenged by targeted work projects.
Dear Hashim Fawzi ,it is difficult to distinguish economically, but the project was first done before the business was run, an example of the process of building a hospital building is a project (my friends in civil engineering) but a hospital is a business, which is a business to make people need care so they can healthy and normal., regards.
For me projects have a beginning and an end whereas business-as-usual is a more or less a continuous process. However, some businesses consists of doing projects (construction companies, management consultancies, funeral services ...). I tend to think of many of my activities as projects eg conceiving-writing-publishing a paper; selecting-booking-enjoying a holiday. Somehow thinking of everyday activites as projects provides a structure to an otherwise messy life; it helps me to prioritise and relax even though many things are only half done and need attention.
Roberto, if I understand you correctly, you are making the point that even if a company’s business consists of undertaking projects, it will have continuous functions such as marketing, HR, finance and so on. I agree.
We have discussed the difference between project based work and business-as-usual. We have also noted that project based companies require central functions to ensure continuity as projects come and go. To complete the picture we should also note that process based business-as-usual companies require projects to adapt/maintain/improve the business; for instance update the IT system, refurbish outlets, recruit a new CEO, develop and launch a new product, purchase a company.
What's the Difference Between Projects and Business as Usual?
Differences include (not exhaustive list):
Project have a start & end dates whereas Business as Usual (BAU) is ongoing or day-to-day business operations.
Project have a short-term specific goal(s) whereas BAU have a long-term higher goal(s).
Project usually subject to resources constraints e.g. time, cost, quality, scope etc. whereas BAU operations usually being allocated with more resources in view of they need to be operated perpetually.
Team trust, team satisfaction & team building sometimes are more difficult to achieve in project team due to time constraint whereas BAU team facing less difficulty in these respects.
Managing BAU operations required the manager to equip with general management skill & functional knowledge whereas managing a project required the project manager to equip with specific project management skill plus functional knowledge.
Project team members likely reporting to both project manager & its own Line of Business (LOB) unit i.e. project team is a matrix organization. Whereas BAU team is likely reporting only to the BAU manager.
A project here is a time-bound process or activity that has a beginning and end date, done once to deliver a product or service in order to achieve beneficial change or create value.
