In bending , there is shear stress besides tensile stress . what's role shear stress play in the fracture during bending? how it influence the fracture?
Shear stress is necessary for plastic deformation. Plastic deformation occurs due to slip of dislocations and slip occurs due shear stress.
Why austempered can have higher toughness than quenched and tempered in steel , though both have same hardness? (ASM Metals Handbook,Vol. 4 ). Thank you.
