It seems to be a growing consensus that the old Hollingshead questionnaire on job-etc-related social status is obsolete. Has anyone developed a questionnaire that taps into the same general idea/construct, where the item content, and contemporary societal valuation of jobs, etc. is relevant to 2014?
Thank you Bernard for your helpful response. The Barratt link referenced in the Yale paper appears to be dead. In any case, the Adams and Weakliem paper makes a case that despite clunky anachronisms in the Hollingshead paper like "telegraph operators" and the cringe-worthy assumption that males are the head of household, etc., that the extant measure is still at least reasonable, if one lumps in web designers into "computer specialists not otherwise specified" etc.
I feel better about using it, since it will at least capture gross individual differences such as unskilled high-school-dropout laborers versus educated white-collar "functional alcoholics". I still have a feeling, though, that there is a need for an updated instrument that incorporates actual INCOME (perhaps weighted less strongly) to show how a plumber can out-earn many "white collar" professions such as social worker, or educated but underpaid commission-based writer of web-blog content.
