As we know, the triboelectric devices and piezoelectric devices are broadly used in energy harvesting and sensing. What're the each advantages of them for energy harvesting and sensing?
From my personal point of view, triboelectric nanogenerators can generate high voltages, but small currents owing to its high resistance. And generally speaking, the voltages and currents of piezoelectric nanogenerators are much smaller than that of triboelectric nanogenerators, but may be more sensitive. So the TENG is more suitable for energy harvesting. As to the PENG, sensing functions could be the better choice.
The main disadvantages for both of these NGs are degradation and mechanical damage because of cyclic mechanical pressure. In TENGs due to friction heat is generated between the contact layer and there is the possibility that due to that heat structural and mechanical properties may alter. For that, researchers are using self-healable materials in nanogenerators. Along with that, The disadvantage of the Tribo-Electric Nano Generator (TENG) is likely lower durability, limited short circuit output current, structural changes, post-stress conditions, etc.
I have attached some of the manuscripts for more insight.
I agree with Xu Liu. TENG generates high voltages and low currents whereas PENG generates low voltage and comparatively higher current. Construction wise TENG is much simpler. More research is required to enhance its performance and hence there is a great opportunity for researchers.
