A colleague asked me this question, and I thought of sharing it with you.
As researchers, we read tons of documents because we love the profession. But if we weren't researchers, what would we be doing?

This is a hypothetical question . I am quite satisfied with my current job. But if I haven't been as a University teacher, I would have been a secondary school teacher.
Personally, I love research and teaching and it was my dream job since my childhood. Otherwise, I can not imagine myself doing anything else more interesting than that.
Well, easy to answer Reuben Tamakloe , be somewhere else doing something similar , I do not believe in dream jobs !!!

Currently I am working as Assistant General Manager in Business Development in a MNC. I would love to have teaching and research as alternate field instead of my current profession.
I am mechanical engineer and totally satisfied with my job forever especially that my research interest is about amputee persons.
Artist Mathematician, statistician, physicist, bird watcher, cloud watcher, sitting on some mountain with beautiful green scenery, lakes with emerald water, moon watcher, rainbow watcher(doing nothing)!
If I was not a medical doctor and then a university lecturer, I guess I would be a civil engineer. My family has been engaged in construction works for 4 generations. My grandfather and father were construction contractors, then my brother, son and nephew were civil engineers. Therefore, if I were in hesitation after high school, the atmosphere of the family would made me a civil engineer.
I will definitely be a class room teacher at a secondary school.

I retired from the military 13 years ago. At that time, I had two job offers. One was a college professor, which I accepted. However, the other job offer was to manage a Counseling Center for recovering alcoholics. So, if I wasn't teaching college courses and conducting educational research, then I would be performing duties as a manager.

I would then have been able to devote more time to study and appreciate the beauty of Mathematics.

Maybe a park ranger or something. I love the outdoors and nature so that would seem interesting.
If I lose this opportunity to pursuit the Ph.D degree , I wish have the happy and quiet life with my boyfriend in north-west region of China. I believe I will spend lots of time enjoying the natural scenery and to be a middle school teacher or traveler.stay hungry, stay foolish.
I would choose the same Job. It was my wish to get a higher degree and work at the university as a teacher and researcher.
If I were not a researcher I would like to be a billionaire to be able to carryng out assessement of fisheable resources for management purposes in the Sea of Tranquility, so that I can dream in the Earthlight during the nigths of full Earth. :)
