Compared to those with common blood groups, what struggles does a person with a rare blood group have to go through during medical emergencies such as lack of universal blood type?
Although larger hospitals usually have an abundance of universal blood to be able to give to the patient, what would happen in smaller clinics?
In cases of a medical emergency, having a rare blood type can be difficult especially if a blood transfusion is needed in order for them to survive. In the US, the most common blood type is O+ (37.4%) and the most rare blood type is AB- (0.6%). In case of an emergency, type O- blood can be given to a patient as it is the universal blood donor, and can be given to anyone regardless of their blood type.
