Since in a multi use MPA, zoning of activities is done, socio- economic factors are taken into consideration, how would this be approached on a terrestrial area.
The zoning approach in terrsetrial areas has a long tradition (longer than in MPAs), zee for instance reports of IUCN or national states on National P:arks and other large nature reserves.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania is a multiple use area that would provide a great terrestrial example for you. In NCA there is quite a bit of conflict occurring over how to balance the needs of people with that of the ecosystem, how to regulate land use, how to define who can and should be allowed to remain in the system, whether people and their livestock actually facilitate ecological integrity to some degree (rather than being seen as solely destructive, a common perception), and other hot questions. The NCA is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with mixed cultural and natural sustainability objectives (see http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/39).
