I am looking for a relatively cheap method that I could use to measure the blood cholesterol levels (pertaining to LDL and HDL) in the blood of Mus musculus. Preferably one that does not sacrifice the accuracy of the measurements.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, the easiest way to measure LDL and HDL levels from the whole blood is through a sequential density-gradient ultracentrifugation with KCl density adjustment. LDL and HDL fractions may be separated and removed by tube slicing, transferred to another tube and counted using a common protein quantification assay (e.g. Lowry) for the apoproteic portion.
Even if the method is conceptually simple, I fully agree with Dr. Franco for clinical chemistry lab support, because the technique requires high precision and experience, and an ultracentrifuge dotation.
For lipoprotein separation method, I suggest you some references:
- Havel et al., "The distribution and chemical composition of ultracentrifugally separated lipoproteins in human serum" (j Clin Invest 34, 1345-1353);
- Schumaker et al, 1986 (Methods in enzymology 128, 155-170)

Have you considered contacting to a clinical chemistry unit in a Hospital or a private cliinical chemistry lab? If possible to do it there it will be cheaper than doing yourself.

There is a difference between LDL or HDL as whole lipoproteins or LDL Cholesterol and HDL-Cholesterol. One of the first methods by ultracentrifugation was published by Schumaker er al,.as Riccardo says. For measurement of Cholesterol in LDL or HDL, there are many kits, which are used in clinical chemistry laboratories.. 0 / 0 · Just now
