Several times I found that most of the Non SCI and open access journals published papers on payment of fee. Whether they check the paper is of scientific relevant or not? They need only payment to sustain their journal.
Why new journals are on the way when thousands of journals are there? Why some governing body provide ISSN number endlessly?
What the main objective of Impact factor? Impact factor just based on citations to the articles of the journal. It means only publications with citations are of good quality, while others are not.
Variations of this question can be found in Researchgate, but here we go again. I can see several questions within one question, so lets dissect the question as follow: 1) The open access journal is a model that is pushing hard the traditional way of publishing. Despite some companies are suspicious for the way they promote their publications and “push” the authors to publish with them, other companies following the open access model have gained good reputation and respect. Despite a new journal doesn’t have an Impact Factor, many of the “good ones” are granted with an IF after few years of good editorial work; 2) It is true that there are thousands of journals and many are emerging, but there is also true that there are many new fields within the different branches of a particular field. New fields are often difficult to publish within certain type of publications, because they are not the main aim of those publications, and therefore, new journals are needed; 3) The main objective of the IF is to show how much publications are used to publish and how often they are cited. The IF doesn’t provide or qualify the quality of the journals. There are very good journals, where is really tough to publish, with low IF, maybe because the journal belongs to a small field. Journals publishing articles that create a trend, or change a paradigm, or provide a good amount of new information, sooner or later will be cited, because we must cite the sources of our knowledge, and the sources that give context to our findings. But once again, the IF is just a number that gives an idea of how often the articles in a certain journal are cited, but that doesn’t mean that all the articles will have the same type of success, or if they are going to be forgotten.
