I have a metallic sample with squared irradiated area 5x5 mm2, however, I need to cover the non-irradiated edges of the sample with smth to mask it in order not to interfere during analysis (we expect phase transformation after irradiation) as the x-ray beam of our instrument is wide. Many thanks.
Please take a small layer of medium to large atomic number elements such as Cu or even Pb or W having a thickness of at least about 0,1mm.
Please compare the XRD peak positions of these metals with the expected peak positions of your sample in order to have no overlap of these peaks with those of your sample.

You are able now to calculate the minimum required thickness by yourself via the Lambert-Beer law of x-ray attenuation.

Remark: when using a Cu x-ray source Fe is not well suited for a cover because of its K-fluorescence, which will be excited by Cu K-alpha.
Maybe, I didn't get the question: Why don't you use the possibilities of your device to restrict the incident beam? Like the available slits?
