Hi Julie. If your data derives from all open ended questions then qualitative analysis is the usual way to go - something like thematic analysis or grounded theory would suit this type of analysis. You may find this useful in terms of how to analyse your data:

Collection of solid data is key - so read up on how to conduct an interview - Charmaz (who writes on Grounded Theory) is good for this.

There are a number of qualitative approaches including Grounded Theory, Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR), and Thematic Analysis. Some of the decision as to which approach to use depends on your goal. Do you simply want to understand what these data show? Then Thematic is sufficient. Are you interested in developing a model that represents the data - then Grounded Theory. Is it important to have a more rigorous scientific process? Then use CQR.

I second Emma Hurley's advice to look at Thematic Analysis. It is widely used and well-defined. I have attached a later article by the same authors that gives more illustrations of their approach to coding.

If you wanted to do the kind of mixed methods analysis you described, that would involve counting codes, which is generally not compatible with a constructivist approach.

I would advise you to have direct consultation from a researcher who has experience in qualitative research. It is good to read some references in this field, but it will not be adequate to guide you to run qualitative analysis correctly.

Thematic analysis

Hi, Julie. I recommend you do a content analysis - thematic analysis. The categorization process can be based on previously defined concepts (theory),  or you can build the category grid from the answers obtained in the questionnaires and interviews (empirical procedure)

Check your research questions and objectives to make sure about your methodology first and what level of your analysis you really need. If you stick with qualitative data, then think of either basic level of thematic content analysis as a descriptive manner to describe what was really understood without to give any further comment. Or move on into higher levels of content analysis to unfold the latent concepts based on your preconceived idea to construct a visual commentary theory or model.

 If you have to employ mixed methods as you ask “would I use mixed methods” I doubt it, because the philosophically mixed method fall into Pragmatic / Realist or Realism and not really social constructivism. Anyhow,  if you would have some quantitative data to analysis as the result of mix method, you can use either descriptive statistic analysis level or inferential level.
