Suppose you wrote an article, submitted it to a peer review journal, and waited for the decision. You final receive that long-awaited letter and its a rejection! What next? Should you tank that article? or you should take the criticism mentioned in the rejection sportingly and revised the MS as suggested and submit it to the same or some other journals.
Science lives (or should live at least) through the discussion of ideas with ones peers. So if a reviewer raises valid points of criticism of an article, I would revise the manuscript accordingly (and do the requested experiments, if necessary) and resubmit it. Unless the study was found to be fundamentally flawed in some manner.
Revise your manuscript according to the suggestions. Generally, journals gives some specific time to the reviewers to review and similarly to authors for completion of review process. Beyond this limit, you can contact the editor of journal about the status of your MS.
In case of rejection, submit the article to a new journal with revised manuscript
Definitely revise and resubmit unless the critique is waaaay off base (in which case you could write a letter to the editor but it probably won't result in a favorable outcome). While it can be a frustrating process, it should hopefully lead to better science.
Before resubmitting, consider passing a revised copy around your department and get feedback from a few trusted colleagues. Hopefully they will catch any glaring errors before the next round of reviewers see your manuscript.

Carefully consider the feedbacks provided by the reviewers/editor and use the helpful ones to improve on your article. Then send to another journal. This is easier when reviewers provide constructive feedbacks and not blanket reviews. If the review/s are constructive, revise the manuscript and send it to another journal as the majority of the colleagues has pointed out. If there is no constructive review or no review at all (it may happen), send the manuscript to another journal. And do not forget that persistence is finally rewarded.
