Hi, I ll start citing the famous Synaptic Homeostasis Hyphotesis of Tononi&Cirelli. (paper attached)
I heard recently that it serves to remove toxins from the brain, which is achieved by shrinking neurons to allow CSF to flow through. Don't know the source, sorry!

Xie et al. (2013) Sleep Drives Metabolite Clearance from the Adult Brain.
There are two recent theoretical contributions I found particularly insightful: Ackermann and Rasch (2014) and Vyazovskiy and Delogu (2014). To summarize, they advance the idea that sleep serves as prophylactic cellular maintenance by a two part system: (i) slow oscillations during SWA and (ii) REM identifying local networks in need of recovery.
Have a series of papers in the beginning of last decade about the driving of gene expression and reverberation of neuronal assemblies during sleep.
