Sometime I use my local value approach and also contextual teaching and learning. One of method also is very interesting in the class room about picnic lasrroom approach
my article in SIRI NA PACCE is one of local value which have strong meaning for my students. It can be a good motivation because it has also islamic religion value.
age, gender, level, motivational level...and a lot more can contribute to ur teaching style...I myself use whole language teaching and learning , task-based language teaching & learning, and form-focused instruction... in EFL settingss
Do a needs analysis of the students first, then be eclectic and use what the students need. There must be a list of almost 20 different methods of instruction. You can find them on WIKI if nothing else.
Thank you for your contributions. I do agree about these priorities in constructing the curriculum (Goal of the course which should meet the students needs, level, age, specialisation or interest, period of course, and some others). I'm interested in making use of what I've learnt through alternative assessment as a means of teaching not only in assessment. I.e. involving students in their own assessment which gave real outcome in improving students' interaction and achievement in class.
A combination of methods with focus on the communicative approach tends to work really well. Learner engagement is also important to foster foreign language learning. Student´s reflection on their own learning also helps. Her eI include some of my papers on learner autonomy:

First, you are supposed to determine what is central to language proficiency. As language teachers, what we care for is language acquisition and language proficiency on the part of the learners. I, for one, absolutely agree with what Wilkins (1974) posits, "Without grammar, little can be conveyed. Without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed." I, therefore, opine that the Lexical Approach can be one of the best approaches among the variety of widely-recognized methods.
I agree with Elizabeth Ann Hiser. You must first determine the outcomes that the students must achieve by the end of the class/semester. Then determine what instructional methods and tasks will allow the students to achieve those outcomes.
It would be a mistake to think that identical methods work best in all situations.
I tend to go for the audio/visual approach. I find it helps keep things fresh and interesting in the class and I do my best to relate the material to the lives of the students. If you make your material fun and relevant for them, you won't lose them.
I think it totally depends on the curriculum and the requirements of the specific institution. Firstly, you might want to find out what is required in the curriculum and the requirements set by the institution. As such, you can decide the best possible teaching method in the specific context.
For me, however, CLT approach is the trend. That is, any teaching method based on CLT approach might be of importance to be implemented in an EFL environment. To be more specific, any teaching method that is based on communication will enable the EFL learners to pick the language so effectively and powerfully. Consequently, they will be fluent speakers of the English language after sometime. I hope you find my two cents helpful.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I'm currently working on organising the curriculum to be presented for 1st grade of the Marine Science College in the University of Basrah. Your contributions added more to the points I entend to cover in the syllabus.
I have not taught EFL but if I had to, I would make sure that early on the students learned the six question asking words. What Where When How Why Who. These words engage the thinking of the learner and initiate conversations. These question asking words, of course, are absolutely essential for opening up knowledge, especially for learning science.
hi. being reflective teachers can help a lot. after applying appropriate techniques in line with your students wants and needs, age and emotions, it is time to reflect on the outcomes; strategic teachers should be action researchers finding the problematic areas, analyzing them and posing a practical solution and applying it. best
