The valid approaches in general depend on both the specific requirements of your case and the disciplinary culture(s) your work context belongs to. In short: what does a taxonomy mean in your case and what kind of results you need to get.

As far as I understand your description, any taxonomy contains several (semantic) features present in each object to be described with it. Like this:

the concept of bachelor may include the following features:

* human

* male

* adult

* not married

In classification theory, these features can be found basically two ways: enumerative and synthetic ones. In the enumerative approach you basically list all possible or relevant classes for your taxonomy. In the synthetic approach you try to identify the features and use them as combinations to define the "classes". In both approaches it is of course essential that the subjects within classes are mutually exclusive.

In the synthetic approach you may encounter the terms facet, faceted classification, facet analysis. A "facet" is essentially a semantic feature and each application of a facet in a subject forms a "focus".
