Im using the BFFM 50-item, likert scale to compare personality traits for online dating users and non-users, I'm unsure what kind of statistical analysis to use? These are my hypotheses:
Hypotheses 1: Non dating sites users score lower for openness, agreeableness, neuroticism, extraversion and higher for conscientiousness.
Hypotheses 2: Dating site users score higher for neuroticism, agreeableness, extraversion, openness and lower for conscientiousness.
First of all, you actually have 5 hypotheses, each comparing dating site users with non-users:
Hypothesis #1: Dating site users will be higher in Neuroticism
#2: Dating site users will be higher in Agreeableness
Etc.
Adding that non-users will be lower is purely redundant.
Statistical tests:
The most parsimonious thing to do would be a series of 5 two-sample t-tests, one for each trait, with users and non-users being the two groups. These establish the statistical significance level for each comparison. (For example, users vs. non-users on Neuroticism.)
