To reach the Minimum effective concentration a specific dose of the drug is given to the human. Similarly, for laboratory animals like swiss albino mice, a specific dose of plant extract may be given. At what dose should I start administering to reach MEC?
@Marzan.. thank you. But I was wondering that not all extract have the same minimum effective dose. Many journals start their dosing ranging from 200-400 mg/kg. What might be a safe range for finding pharmacological action
I think the calculation for dose is dependent on LD50 and the dose generally select by LD50/10 or LD50/20.
So if LD50=4000mg/kg, then you can use 400mg/kg and 200mg/kg dose.
Perform the acute oral toxicity studies as indicated in OECD guideline 425. For edible variety of plants the limit test specifies 2000 mg/kg as the starting dose. Take 1/10 th of the dose as your starting dose and increase it logarithmically. N.B. Female wistar rats are preferred in this guideline.
