Punishments should be used in history classes as something as terrible as any behavior to be avoided.

Punishment to the student should be avoided as  per as possible as the main purpose for us to improve the environment of the student so that he may come with his study without any complex & fear .

If the punishment is necessary depending on the nature of the offence as it is in the line with the behavior ,disturbing the atmosphere of study of other student or it is for his individual behavior of his study becoming the negligent  in his performance of study .Whatever may be case before deciding the punishment necessary job of line of demarcation is necessary so that punishment may not get abused for the student .

My view Dickson would be , let's keep crime and education different . Unless students are learning criminal law and mafia culture and operations . 

At schools , supposedly a healthy environment from teachers to students at least up till 22 years of age . Then you would assume they have a responsibility and commitment to better themselves and not create nuisance .

I am  not for punishing again it depends the extent of hurt we have endured . I truly believe in open communication and dialog .

Punishment should be focused on effecting a positive change in behaviour. Punishment cannot be ruled out in educational system, but it should be 'mild' and channeled toward making the culprit a better person.

I also agree that a punishment needs to be in the educational and applied sense when the "talk" or "warnings" have had no effect. Usually, when it involves pecuniary part, it produces better effects, as in the case of speeding traffic tickets.

In the case of teaching activities, with almost and / or adult students, there is certainly no way to use the value collection procedure. In particular, I combine a set of rules with classes at the beginning of the semester, and part of the assessment involves losing points for cell phone use, parallel conversations while the teacher or a classmate is talking, and so on. I teach in accounting and architecture courses and this, in practice, has brought great results.

The only meaningful value in punishment and reward is to motivate students to change their behaviour. And I would suggest, you would want that change to be permanent, not just in the one situation. From that perspective I would suggest your question is framed incorrectly. Punishment and reward are NOT the only options to consider and In fact are the least useful. Based on motivation theory reward and punishment give at best short term positive change and at worst vengeful behaviour. More commonly punishment yields disengagement. Reward is more complex. Reward has been shown to demotivate students in the longer term and in fact has little benefit in complex situations such as learning at school.

Motivation theory suggests that to make meaningful change you need autonomous engagement. That means the student is intrinsically motivated to change or believes that change is consistent with their beliefs or for the general good at least. Effective motivation lies in helping students recognise the VALUE in change, supporting their belief in their CAPACITY to change and allowing some AUTONOMY to do so. This implies a whole gamut of behaviours on the part of the teacher, called autonomy supportive behaviours. These behaviours are implied in Positive Behaviour programs as has been described elsewhere.

SO should punishment or reward be used at all. YES but punishment is an absolute last resort of teachers who can't think of any better idea for motivating the student to behave in a more functional way. Reward should be used sparingly and if possible in what is described as an autonomy supportive framework
