This is a very broad question and I doubt anyone will come up with an answer to suit everyone. In my view, religion and ethics do not always go hand in hand. Sometimes they do, for sure, but I do not think we can take this for granted. There are plenty of examples throughout human history of people acting unethically in the name of religion. Conversely, in more recent years, there are a growing number of examples of atheists acting in highly ethical ways. My own view is that, as researchers, our ethical position should be to use our skills and our work to increase social justice and reduce injustice and inequality. But not everyone agrees with me; some researchers think our ethical position should be to strive for neutrality and objectivity in our work, and others think that ethics is for research ethics committees/IRBs to deal with. Although I think your question is difficult to answer, I think it is a good question, and worth taking time to consider. I look forward to reading other people's thoughts on this important topic.
