I am particularly interested in cities that may have experienced a shift in their economy from a manufacturing base to a new knowledge economy. I am seeking to compare and consider case studies from around the world with the regional city of Geelong in Australia which has a population of approx. 200,000 people. What are the unique considerations that apply to second-tier cities? How might revitalisation efforts be different in a second-tier city as opposed to major or capital cities? Any good references would be appreciated.

If liveability rather than strictly prosperity is of interest to you then you might want to look at Bristol in the UK. its experience of improving playability, cyclability, creating more friendly streets might be helpful
