Lot of work on reclamation of alkali soils have been done and pH of these soils come down to 9 and 9.5 from 10.5. Similarly ESP also came down from 95 and ranges between 30-45. Are some varieties available to grow in these reclaimed soil in peri-urban fields of metro cities for catering the requirement of vegetables for burgeoning populations?

I cannot comment on the varieties suitable for your area, but among the most tolerant of alkali soils are asparagus, beet, broccoli, cabbage (cabbage family is generally considered tolerant of high pH), cauliflower, cucumbers, celery, Chinese cabbage, mustard greens, turnips and Brussels sprouts.

Rrcantly I come across the demand of Peri urban farmers who want to grow vegetables in there recently reclaimed alkali lands. Hi, our regional research station, Bharuch is working on this aspect and the recommended Bhindi, sugar beat, cabbage and turnips can be grown in alkali soil. although I don't know varieties.
