Major problem of arid soils is low productivity. Best possible methods/technologies available to enhance social status of the farmers through enhanced productivity.
My small personal experience in the Gulf shows that the best way to manage - is the construction of soils. On the basis of local materials and imported soil-modifiers (turf, synthetic hydrogels, silicon-organic repellents, etc.) we form layered structures, retaining irrigation water and blocking secondary salinization. Thus, is possible to solve the main soil and environmental problems of arid agriculture and possible to obtain stable yields of plant products (in agriculture, lanscaping, etc.).
Arid lands are both thirsty and hungry .Technologies should be for land shaping ,stabilization and water harvesting. Selection , testing and use of appropriate tree species both fruit and timber yielding, and appropriate grass species, for fodder , soil stabilization, and medicinal purpose.Once grasses and trees are established, the whole ecosystem changes.Limited extent of arable crops and vegetables can be grown.Efficient use of harvested water is very important.Livetock is an important component in arid ecosystem. I think this will lead to further discussion.
Dear @ Andrey Valentinovich Samagin, thanks for sharing your valuable experiences. I also started my carrier from Sheetalpur watershed I'm Hamirpur, U.P. India in 1985. Since than also get opportunities to work in some other very prestigious watershed too. Your suggestions will really helpful to me
Dear Sir @ Dr Subba Rao thanks for your suggestions and as you very rightly mentioned that it require further discussion. Comments and discussion on this topic is awaiyed. Regards
