The production of components and assemblies in the nuclear area employs fusion welding and in the solid state as a method of manufacture in the various metallic materials. With the increasing use of new ceramic polymer materials and composites new bonding techniques need to be developed.
As I know, conventional methods are used for joining these materials:
- Mechanical joining
- Adhesive bonding
- Diffusion bonding
- Brazing (Resistance, induction)
- Ultrasonic Welding
- Resistance Spot and seam Welding
- Induction Welding
- Laser Welding
- Electron Beam Welding
- GTAW
- GMAW
Ceramics are generally brittle and fusion welding which involves application of an intense heat source is not appropriate for many ceramic materials. Joining that involves careful application of heat without significant melting is appropriate for joining ceramic materials. Diffusion bonding or brazing are more appropriate ways for joining ceramic materials. Adhesive bonding is commonly used for polymers although some polymers can be welded.
Most recommended methods for joining composites is adhesive bonding and brazing and diffusion bonding are prescribed for ceramics. Mechanical joining is the normal practice. Ultrasonic welding is another method.
Mechanical alloying is appropriate but might need some strong adhesive/binding agents. I second other methods stated by Dr. SGK
