I am working on Small tea growers(STGs) of Assam in the domestic and global value chain. I am looking on the structural changes, vulnerability of STGs, upgrading and institutional aspects in tea value chain.
I think the instrument should measure economic, social and environmental vulnerability f tea growers. The ratio of profits to growers vis a vis buyers at each stage of the value chain would be interesting to see. This data could be disaggregated by gender of the tea grower, land holding, other identities, level of indebtedness to begin with. Contract growing vs self employed is another axiom to be looked at. On the social vulnerability scale, there is need to examine harassment of tea growers by buyers- sexual, use of caste names etc. Environment vulnerability is important in the case of contract growing, when the company dictated what variety, what chemical should be grown, which could have long term implications for the grower.
