Dear all,

I'm working on my master's thesis for the studies of Human Resources. My PROCESS output shows that path a, b, and c are significant (based upon p < .05). Moreover, path c' shows an insignificant effect (p = .08). After testing these causal relations, I looked at the bootstrapping interval levels to test the indirect effect. Nevertheless, zero has been found between the BootLLCI and BootULCI (CI [−.00, .12]), which concludes upon a non-significant indirect effect (Hayes, 2013). See the attached picture for the exact results.

My thesis supervisor told me that there are several reasons that could explain an indirect effect even though other paths are significant. Examples she gave were the following:

- path a is very positive and path b is very negative, which tangles the effect out, and leads to insignificance;

- path a and path b are really marginally significant, and this will make the model more complex, reduce the power, and thus could lead to insignificance.

However, neither of these reasons applies to my results (I believe).

Could you maybe support me by providing some inspiration/thoughts/sources that could explain the rationale behind the insignificance of the indirect (mediation) effect?

Thank you in advance!

Naõmi
