I would say that the stress levels fluctuate depending on the research project. So, you may start at 3 on the scale but it raises to 5 nearing the deadline for submission, be it a grant proposal, journal article, or project report.
It may be stages of fluctuation In middle of the work and In beginning, the level is 4, during process ranges between 2 to 3 and in final stage may be 4 to 5. There may be variations depending on Discipline and , Nature of work. Prof. Debra Sharona rightly explained. My stress level is 2 always.
I’d say it depends on the institution one works for. For instance, the institution I work for has been like 2, but there are others more on the scale of 5. All of them in the same country.
High level of stress was notice among Researchers. The major causes of stress were found to be academic workload and time management. High stress levels among participants correlated with many unhealthy behaviors, including compromised quality of diet and decreased quantity of sleep.
But in the end i would also like to highlight there are many reason for increaase or decrease stress among researchers.

*Supervisor
*Sensitivity nature of researchers.
In order to reduce stress, researchers need to become Mentally Stronger by following ways:
Practice labeling your emotions.
Establish healthy ways to deal with uncomfortable emotions.
Identify and replace unhealthy thought patterns.
Take positive action.
Give up the bad habits that rob you of mental muscle.
Ordinarily, stress is an overriding psychological phenomenon dominating all aspects of intellectual endeavors such as doing research. However, researchers, both men and women, should almost invariably utilize a stress management program to control the level of stress that can be debiliative and inhibitive. The main reason is that in highly complex outcomes with byzantine complexities, the researchers need to pay attention to two different but complementary factors; namely a flexible working plan and effective coping strategies.
