Balancing the pros and cons, should scientists be encouraged to use social media? It is up to the individual to decide. A panel on ‘Engaging with Social Media’ at the 2014 AAAS annual meeting noted that it is not necessary for researchers to have a social media presence. But once they decide to participate it is important to have a clear idea of what they would like to achieve from their online interactions and to decide which platforms would best serve this purpose. Keeping separate professional and private accounts can also help maintain a good work-life balance
