Thank you@ Dinesh Kumar, I fully agree with your point. Yes taking more than the required time is not the best option. Thank you for your contribution.
Dear Dr.Muhammad Arshad...yes doctor, I fully endorse your point that there are some subject/research areas - very complex and difficult. Thank you for your contribution to this discussion.
Dear Dr.Atiqe Ur Rahman... Thank you for listing out the driving and restraining factors of pursuing phd. It is pertinent information. Agree that supervisor and research scholar should have good working relationship. Grateful to you.
May be Fellowship is main reason Or May be Not Interest to finish timely from the scholar side. Or Academic relationship is trouble between scholar and supervisor. Yoganandan G.
I fully endorse your views doctor Itishree Padhi. Those who are dedicated and focused easily complete within 3-4 years. My sincere thanks to you for your information to this discussion. Regards
Dear Yoganandan G. I think the answer to this question is very relative, because the spending period to complete a PhD depends on the complexity of the subject that will be discussed. Kind regards, Ernani
Dear Dr Tarek Alshemarry, thank you for your views. I am able to get a better picture of what could be the ideal number of years for doctoral degree. Sincere thanks to you for your time and valuable points. Warm regards Yoganandan G
Dear Dr Ernani Contipelli. I agree with you on your point that it depends on various factors including the complexity of the subject. But, imagine that you have 2 scholars. One scholar takes say 3 years another takes 6 years. Can we conclude the second research/ PhD a better one?
Sincerely Looking forward to hear from you... doctor.
Thank you for your time and thought provoking points.
Dear Dr Rana Muhammad Adnan Ikram , thank you for your point of view. I fully endorse your suggestion. Thank you for your kind support and valuable contribution to this discussion. Warm regards Yoganandan G
It depends on the candidate's diligence. If he gives it his all, it can be finished at a normal tempo in 3-5 years. The aim of the PhD dissertation is to prove the scientific aptitude.
Dear Dr Atiqe Ur Rahman , You are correct in saying the wasted time is itself a big punishement. We need to support them- it will encourage others to plunge into research. Deeply thankful to your participation in this discussion.Warm regards Yoganandan G
Dear Dr Nityananda Das , I completely agree with you on this point that - Spending much time is definitely problematic relating to getting a job. I too have observed with many students who took lot of time in completing their phd. Thank you for thoughts on this topic and your valuable support to my research work. Warm regards Yoganandan G
Dear Dr László Vértesy , You have highlighted a very interesting aspect of research. Many scholars join and pursue their PHD without right attitude - PHD dissertation is to prove their scientific acumen. Sincere thanks for your kind contribution and support to this discussion. Warm regards Yoganandan G
Dear Dr Muhammad Faheem , I agree with you that- 3 to 5 years is enough to complete a PhD degree with some innovations. Profoundly thankful for sharing your thoughts on this topic and valuable participation in this discussion.Warm regards Yoganandan G
Normally, for a ph.D degree, it is 3- 5 years. It may be a problem regarding the job if it is spent much time over Ph.D degree. It is enough time that a ph.D candidate can express his/her new/innovative methods in his/her ph.D dissertation. He/ she can find out the new things thoroughly for his/her research during 3-5 years. It is a waste of time, money and the efforts over spending too much time on the ph.D degree.
I think there are several factors influencing this topic and generally the means, the originality of the subject, the access to the data, the field of study for the equality aspect of the PHD, I think that it is necessary to integrate another classification of the theses
Often, the reasons that lead doctoral students to spend more time obtaining their PhD have more to do with the students themselves than with the university. As everywhere, some drop out or fall behind because of personal or family problems. Others find that they lack the skills or are offered less demanding jobs.
The quality of the output is the most important, and if some have come out with something important for his field , then I think that there are international awards for that matter ... No PhD is preferred over others because of the length of time nothing more
Generally, for a ph.D degree it is 4 years, in some cases, not more than 5 years. It may create problems regarding the job if it is spent much time over a Ph.D. degree. Also, age is an important thing during your study.
Dear Dr. Niam A.Fawaz , I completely agree with you - Quality of research is of paramount importance. Also, one of your that worth its attention is - No PhD is preferred over others-. So, Quality is important - but in the name of quality, spending lot of time will be counter productive. Thanks a zillion. Thankful to your valuable contribution, and support to this discussion.
Dear Dr. Doufnoune RACHIDA Rachida , I totally in agreement with your observation that - " more to do with the students themselves than with the university "- because two of my scholars are also taking more time.My encouragements, words of appreciation & expectation all went in vain. Deeply thankful to your valuable points and wonderful contribution to this discussion. Warm regards Yoganandan G
Dear Dr. Abdelkader BOUAZIZ , Yes. I agree with you - in rare cases - only in rare cases it can go long- it all depends upon the subject/research at hand. My sincere thanks for your kindness and significant contribution to this forum. Warm regards Yoganandan G
Dear Dr. Rachid ZEGAIT , I completely agree with you on your point that there are many factors at play. Your suggestion is worth everybody's attention that -" necessary to integrate another classification" - Really thanks. Your information and contribution to this forum is of immense value to me. Grateful to you for your support. Warm regards Yoganandan G
Dear Dr. Zin Myo Swe , You have rightly pointed out the issue of spending money. I agree with you on this. Profoundly thankful to your kind participation in this discussion.Warm regards Yoganandan G
Dear Dr. Silvia Marcu , I fully endorse your observation - taking more than 4 years - too long. But, there are few scholars taking more time to complete.
Profoundly thankful for your participation and support to this discussion.
Dear Dr. M.K. Tripathi , Yes. You have raise a valid point. The students spending more time may face problems in the job market. Very much thankful to your time, kind participation and support to this discussion.
Some projects take a long time, and the researcher may fail in the first stages of the project, which makes him lag behind the rest ... But the doctoral project in my opinion is like a series of episodes, one of which completes the other, so the researcher will not be able to obtain a doctorate unless he completes all these episodes because it is not a scientific degree only, but rather a philosophy that he loves to understand and obtain results for each stage in it ... And frankly, time does not matter because many inventions have consumed many years of researchers, but they are still immortal to this day, so the most important thing is to succeed and reach his goal at the end.
Dear Dr. Manal Hadi Kanaan, I completely agree with you on the need for goal orientation in PHD research. Also, time should not be a limitation - and you have correctly pointed out that many inventions took its own time. Deeply thankful to you for your kindness and support. Warm regards Yoganandan G
Dear Dr. Mariam Paulis Sada , I am very glad to get your views/endorsement. Really thanks for your time and kind support to this interaction. Warm regards Yoganandan G
Dear Dr. Safaa K. Kadhem , I agree with you - it depends on many factors - one such important factor is the research (topic/problem) itself. Very much thankful to your kind participation and support to this discussion. Warm regards Yoganandan G
We must not forget that there are doctoral studies in all disciplines, not only in the scientific-experimental field. In some doctoral studies, more time is needed for testing, or studies with greater need of time, but there are also doctoral studies in the field of social sciences and humanities that do not necessarily need so many years to achieve research. Many years doing a doctorate is not always synonymous with quality.
For me, It depends on the nature and scope of the research. And also the actual conditions while doing the research (there may even be some mishaps along the way; health, for example: it happened to me). In my case it took me 6.5 years to finish my doctoral thesis (and then I waited 6 months to defend it). But, for 4 years I accumulated research with my teaching activity in higher education, in addition to other activities and functions in my faculty (meanwhile, I was for 3 years with an international research scholarship). Besides, my thesis is huge (it was necessary): about 1300 pages. I know people who have spent 12 or 13 years (and even more) with theses of about 250/300 pages.
However, I should point out, for me the important thing is that doctoral students succeed, overcome difficulties, and actually manage to finish their theses.
