There is an increase of international rankings that rank universities fundamentally for their research results.
Dear Rolando, I am truly astonished about why everyone accepts these rankings and just follows the rules. As we know, there is a huge discussion going on about those rankings. I personally have the suspicion that there is a "hidden hand" behind the establishment of the rankings. (I do mean particularly a hidden hand from Shanghai University, or from THE, f.i.).
There is a deep asymmetry among the sciences, among universities and the countries. Of course, "you have to play the game", and yet the rules of the gain are not clear at not, apparently.
Scimago is one of the sources or one of the players of the game. The game helps to have a snapshot of the situation here or there. However, I cordially invite to rise our suspicions about something else farther than the sheer snapshot.
This ranking is important to standardize the curriculum and all the fundamental basis of the universities and this will reflect the strength of their research results.
As they are currently structured, bibliometric rankings do not relate well to the missions of universities and centres whose principal mission is not only research, or at least not internationally-referenced basic research.
All these rankings helps students to find out more respectable journals and papers, sequentially performing more reputable works.
Scientometry is a recent and most important discipline. It all started, it seems, with the Canberra report, and front then on. In the past scientists, philosophers, researchers didn't have such a framework - that can be used sometimes as a constraint.
The not so kind face of scientometry are the rankings; at least in the current situation.
