How to purify the mixture of the aldehyde and imine?
During the reaction process monitoring the reaction time and finishing using TLC.
every specific time ( 15 - 30 min.) take TLC for both reactant ( aldehyde ) and the reaction mixture on the same tlc plate, with passing time the spot of aldehyde disappear and appearing new spot (with different Rf) for the product (imine).When the spot of aldehyde completely disappeared it means the reaction is reached to the end ( this time from starting the reaction is reaction time).
Regarding to the purification, if the aldehyde is liquid and the product id solid, separate by recrystallization, if not, separate by column chromatography.
Keeping the TLC plate in iodine chamber is enough to identify the formation of the product as well as the presence of unreacted aldehyde and amine
Take aldehyde and reaction mixture in same TLC plate.
Aldehyde stain can analyzed by KMnO4 stain.
1st check the TLC in iodine. Better to try with EWG.
It's better way to sepate the reaction mixture in column chromatography
Aldehyde or ketone u can check with 2,4 DNP stain.
Amine will shon in ninihydrin
And imines can test with KMnO4...
Some of the imines show clear yellow spots, it doesn't need any TLC stains even not required UV chamber also
