Well vaccines are not the only approach to block virus they is also quite a lot of attempts to use serum from cured patients which have shown some blocking antibodies. They is also several groups trying to produce Human monoclonals neutralising antibodies which would be used as Passive immunisation. This approach might give faster results then a vaccine which has to go through all the different stages with safety and efficacy trial before to be eventually used in Humans. Also remember that efficacy trials on large scales will only be possible if the virus circulates actively in the population of choice and not forgetting that all populations on the globe reacts quite differently to vaccines.

Another point concerning striking news from Vaccine development companies, don't take it for granted, most of small biotech needs some investors so they might make some big announcements in order to draw attention of the potential investors. Results in Mice or even in Macaques or other primates are not a predictor of efficacy in humans !

What I understand that until now, the researchers and scientists are still busy looking for the solution with the vaccine and there is no specific date when.

Ronald Valledor Gomeseria Correctly pointed out. I think if the WHO gets into the Virology lab of Wuhan then there are possibilities of early solution to the vaccine.

COVID-19 vaccine: How many doses? When it will be available? What would be the cost? Will it work? Chinese COVID-19 vaccine is being tested on health care workers in Brazil in the phase 3 trial. Two doses in the form of IM injection over a period of 3 months (1). India has done a deal with Astra-Zeneca the launcher of Oxford vaccine. In India the vaccine will be available for Indian rupees 1000 ($ 14-15), whether per injection or two doses not clear (2). Produced vaccine will be destroyed, in case it does not show effectiveness.

Corona vaccine developed at the Oxford University will be in India by November. Serum Institute already invested 200 million as taking the risk to go ahead. Trial 1st phase results are favourable with no serious side effects. They are confident on going onto the phase 3 trial in India by August, which will probably take two and half months. If the trial goes successful means 60 million vials will be made per month and out of that 30 million will be used in India and other 50% will be distribute to other countries. They made it very clear unless the whole globe is vaccinated and the vulnerable population is protected, the fear factor will not allow the businesses to open everywhere !!

Russia approves world's first coronavirus vaccine, Putin announces

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow's Gamaleya Institute has registered the world's first COVID-19 vaccine for use. He said his daughter is among those already inoculated.

Russia's Health Ministry has given regulatory approval for the world's first COVID-19 vaccine after less than two months of human testing.

"This morning, for the first time in the world, a vaccine against the new coronavirus was registered" in Russia, Putin said.

Putin added that the vaccine, developed by Moscow's Gamaleya Institute, has proven efficient during tests and promises to offer "sustainable immunity" against the coronavirus.

"This vaccine ensures full safety of using the vaccine and its efficiency.''

This vaccine is named as “Sputnik V”; provides immunity against SARSCoV-2 for two years. But the results of clinical trials have yet to be made public.

The vaccine is administered in two doses and consists of two serotypes of human adenovirus, each carrying S-antigen of new coronavirus. The encoded DNA is set to develop immune response.

This platform used for the vaccine was developed by Russian Scientists over 20 years and had formed basis for several other vaccines like Ebola. The next clinical trial would involve several thousand people.

The first batch of vaccine will be made available for medical personnel in the next two weeks.

The vaccine could be available for mass use in October, according to the country’s health ministry!!

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday said that a total of 156 economies representing nearly two-thirds of the world's population have joined the COVAX Facility, an international initiative to ensure equitable global access to vaccines against the novel coronavirus.

The list includes 64 wealthier and self-financing countries, which accounts for about two-thirds of the global population, a statement issued by the WHO and GAVI vaccine alliance said reported Reuters.

"This means that 156 economies, representing roughly 64 percent of the global population in total, are now either committed to or eligible for the COVAX Facility, with more to follow," the WHO said in a statement on Monday.

The COVAX Facility is part of COVAX, the vaccines pillar of the Access to Covid-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, which is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi and the WHO, in partnership with developed and developing country vaccine manufacturers, Unicef, the World Bank, civil society organizations and others.

According to a report by Reuters, WHO said governments, vaccine manufacturers, organizations and individuals have committed $1.4 billion towards vaccine R&D so far, but the initial target in seed funding needed by the end of 2020 amounts to $2 billion. These funds will be used to accelerate the scale-up of vaccine manufacturing to secure 2 billion doses of vaccine, enough to vaccinate 1 billion people assuming the vaccine requires a two-dose regimen.

China prepares to declare victory in global vaccine race - and assures the world theirs is safe

In a sterile corridor lined with laboratories, scientists in hazmat suits drop liquid into small vials with pipettes. Then trays of test-tubes are sealed and packaged into boxes - ready for distribution.

This sprawling new facility in south Beijing is already producing thousands of doses per day of a coronavirus vaccine developed by SinoVac, which the Chinese pharmaceutical firm says will be rolled-out across the world early next year.

Sinovac is one of four Chinese vaccines in last-stage human trials, a higher number than any other nation in the world. Also in the leading pack are a handful of final stage vaccines being developed in countries including the UK and US.

“Our goal is to provide the vaccine to the world, including the US, EU and others,” CEO Yin Weidong said this week, though it remains to be seen if the company can win approval in Western countries with tough regulatory processes.

Beijing appears to be on the cusp of declaring success in the global vaccine race after having already claimed victory in the “people’s war” against the coronavirus. It would be a bold move for China, underscoring its advancing scientific prowess, and one that could help the government deflect global anger against its pandemic cover-up.

But it also means securing public confidence in a newly-formulated vaccine fast-tracked through studies, developed in the country where authorities suppressed news of the pandemic when the deadly virus first emerged. China’s long history of food and safety scandals from expired meat to tainted baby formula has not helped, either.

To that end, key figures including Mr Yin and Gao Fu, head of China’s centre for disease control and prevention, have been injected with experimental vaccines in a bid to show that they are safe.

Ninety percent of SinoVac employees, nearly 3,000 people, have also been jabbed. Dubbed CoronaVac, the series of two shots to be administered two to four weeks apart injects a deactivated virus to prompt an immune response from the body. Seasonal flu vaccines employ the same method, injecting a virus already killed chemically so that patients do not become ill.

Even Beijing is getting involved in SinoVac’s efforts to build global trust in its vaccine, with the government organising a press tour this week to view the firm’s quality control labs and newly-built production facility.

Construction finished so recently for the plant – expected to manufacture as many as 300 million doses a year – that a pile of excess bricks still remains at the entrance. Nearby, more facilities are being built as SinoVac races to match the high demand Mr Yin anticipates.

An emergency programme in China has been rolled out by the government to inoculate groups of people considered to be at high-risk, including border officials and medical personnel.

SinoVac has supplied tens of thousands of vaccines for the emergency inoculations, though the Chinese government has not not revealed the full extent of the programme.

Experts have warned of the risks of administering vaccines before phase three studies conclude – a global standard for clinical trials. But Mr Yin said he stood behind what his company was developing, pointing to early study results published in May in the journal, Science, that found its vaccine had induced effective antibodies in mice, rats and monkeys.

The following month, the company said that tests with hundreds of volunteers had found no severe side effects, and that the vaccine shots produced an antibody response in more than 90 per cent of patients.

SinoVac expects to begin analysing data this year from final stage tests, with phase three trials under way in Brazil, Turkey and Indonesia, given severe outbreaks and limited vaccine research and development capacity. One is planned for Bangladesh, and Chile is a possibility, said Mr Yin.

So far, around 30,000 people have been inoculated through these trials, though he declined to comment on the efficacy rate before further data comes in. More trials are planned to study its effect in children and the elderly.

It remains to be seen if China will follow through on its pledge to ensure coronavirus vaccines are a global public good and not allow geopolitical dynamics to get in the way. China, for instance, has not joined the World Health Organization’s initiative to ensure equitable access to immunisations.

From existing results, “we can actually see the antibody level and the immunisation effect is actually very good, so that’s why I’m confident that CoronaVac will be successful,” said Mr Yin.

“But on the medical side, we still have to complete clinical trials. We have not succeeded yet, but we’re one step closer.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the preparedness of Covid-19 vaccine delivery, distribution and administration. Prime Minister appreciated the efforts of innovators, scientists, academicians and pharma-companies in their efforts to develop vaccines and has directed that every effort should be made to facilitate the research, development and manufacturing of the vaccine. Five vaccines are in advanced stages of development in India, out of which 4 are in Phase II/III and one is in Phase-I/II.  Countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, Qatar, Bhutan, Switzerland, Bahrain, Austria and South Korea – have shown keen interest in partnering for vaccine development of Indian vaccines and use thereof.

In an effort to administer the vaccine at the first available opportunity, database of healthcare and frontline workers, augmentation of cold chains and procurement of syringes, needles, etc. are in advanced stages of preparation.

The vaccination supply chain is being enhanced and non-vaccine supplies are being escalated.  Medical and nursing students and faculty will be involved in the training and implementation of the vaccination programme.  Every step is being steadily put in place to ensure that vaccines reach every location and person according to the prioritisation principles.

The Prime Minister has directed to work in collaboration with all reputed national and international institutions and regulators to ensure the rigour and highest global standards in Indian research and manufacturing.

National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for Covid-19 (NEGVAC) in consultation with State Governments and all relevant stakeholders have accelerated the implementation of vaccination of priority groups in first phase.

The digital platform for vaccine administration and distribution is prepared and test runs underway in partnership with the State and District Level stakeholders.

The Prime Minister reviewed the aspects of emergency use authorisation and for manufacture and procurement of medicine. As the results of these Phase III trials from national and international vaccine arrive, our robust and independent regulators will speedily and rigorously examine these for according authorisation for use.

The Government has provided assistance of Rs 900 crore under Covid Suraksha Mission to support Research & Development of Covid-19 vaccination.

The Prime Minister directed that a time-bound plan be laid out for speedy regulatory clearances and timely procurement for early rollout of the vaccination drive.

The Prime Minister appreciated comprehensive efforts at vaccine development. He also emphasised that given the persisting pandemic scenario there is no place for any relaxation in preventive measures such as wearing masks, keeping distance and ensuring hygiene.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary to PM, Cabinet Secretary, Member (Health) NITI Aayog, Principal Scientific Advisor, Secretary Health, DG ICMR, officers of PMO, and Secretaries of related Departments of Government of India.
