A bio active zincoxide nanoparticle sample with -20 zeta potential showed cancer cell growth inhibition. At the same time a bioactive zincsulphide nanoparticle sample with -9 zeta potential showed no cancer cell growth inhibition. Also particle size of ZnS was comparitively less.What might have contributed for the the inhibitory activity of ZnO nano particle? Is it the Zetapotential? please help
A negative zeta potential means that the nanoparticles have a negatively charged surface, so they are going to behave like a negatively charged particle. Being the zeta potential negative, the nanoparticles are going to be attracted to anything in the medium that has positive charges, and be repulsed from anything with negative charges. Depending on the ionic concentration of the medium, the type of molecules and cells (and their surface sharge), the nanoparticles will be attracted or repelled.
I don't know which medium you used. If the medium is different (for example, a higher ionic concentration) to the real one, the zeta potential will vary. ZnO will act as a negative particle whereas the ZnS can change to a positive zeta potential. If the medium is the same, because of the more negativity of the zeta potential in ZnO they may have stronger interaction with cells or molecules.

The zeta potential value is practically irrelevant without reference to the pH and ionic make up of the surrounding medium. ZP is a holistic property of the system and not just the particle itself.
