I am using this ultrasound model to identify the appearance of pathologies in a concrete beam and the sensitivity of the equipment is important to differentiate what is variation of the signal due to random effects (experiment) from a variation due to the appearance of a crack, properly said.

Generally ultrasonic pulse velocity testing equipment measures the ultrasonic travel time through concrete specimen. The sensitivity is 0.1 micro second for commonly available commercial devices.
To identify an ultrasound parameter for the characterization of the viscoelastic behaviour of cement concrete or the measurement of yound modulus for hardened cementitious concrete, various intern parameters influences the wave propagation and the visibility of the received echoes, such influencing parameters could be the central frequency of the emission transducter (wavelength), the porosity of the material (attenuation due to diffraction), the temperature of the thermostated room where the experiment occures), etc

Regarding the ultrasound equipment, does any variation of 0.1 micro second represent a structural change? Or is a statistically significant variation necessary to infer that there was a structural change?
I would suggest that only 0.1 micro second variation should always be avoided. This could be because of various other factors than the structural variations in the concrete. First thing is that the instrument itself having resolution of 0.1 order should not be considered as it is the limitation of the measurement device. So, this much variation is obviously expected. Another point is the variation due to ultrasonic transducers placement, couplant application and the amount of pressure applied. Also the precise location of testing matters. If all above such factors are considered and precisely maintained which is extremely difficult to achieve and variation observed is definitely due to the property of the concrete. But if only quality is to be assessed for bad, poor or good it really does not matter because the ultrasonic path generally considered will be higher.
P. K. Dubey Would you have papers that I could use as a reference to explain this issue of sensitivity and that would also show the region where the ultrasound works inside the concrete, for an indirect measurement (The two probes on the same concrete surface)?
