Media plays a very important role in every stage of disaster management. How can media involve itself or what is the the role that media can play to reduce the disaster risk.
1) The media forges a direct link between the public and emergency organizations and plays a very important role in disseminating vital information to the public before, during and after disasters.
2) The media assists in the management of disasters by educating the public about disasters; warning of hazards, gathering and transmitting information about affected areas; alerting government officials; relief organizations and the public to specific needs, and facilitating discussions about disaster preparedness and response for continuous improvement.
3) To help the media fulfil these roles, direct and effective working relationships between the media and disaster management organizations should be established and maintained.
Dear Raju, in my opinion you could consult Disaster Risk Communication literature. Although this field does not exclusively focus on media’s role on DRM/DRR/Resilience, it has a lot of works that reflect on media’s role. Look this, for instance: “The Effectiveness of Disaster Risk Communication: A Systematic Review of Intervention Studies” by Bradley et al. (2014). There are certain important concepts some contained in “Psychological First Aid” material that would be relevant and helpful to put into a “Public Service Announcement” (PSA) or into a YouTube message both of which I have worked on .These concepts can help with respect to preparing to minimize problems before a disaster occurs, how to deal with situation and feelings during a disaster and then how to cope post disaster with respect to recovery, support and coping with feelings. This model well known can to some extend limit the trauma of a disaster and provide a safer way to cope before, during and post disaster and how to achieve reasonable recovery.
Specific attention should be given to vulnerable postulations such as those with disability, the frail, the homeless, those living in poverty, etc.
The media do not always have a positive effect, they may have a positive or negative effect on increasing or decreasing each stage of preparation, response and recovery on the resilience of society.
