Bonhoeffer referred to his culture as "a society come of age" (i.e., that it was no longer grounded in religion). This description is undoubtedly true of many Western societies as well as elsewhere in the world. Thus raising the question is there is place for the practice of spiritual care in state run institutions (e.g., hospitals, prisons, military) ?
I think of spirituality as the depth dimension of human experience, the dimension of meaning, value, and being inaccessible to the five senses but which is existentially unavoidable. Even nonreligious people cannot help reflecting on questions of meaning, value, and being and frequently wonder about their purpose in life. Accordingly, there is a place for spiritual care in state-run institutions, because spirituality can never be eradicated from the human condition.
